Estonia opens new Honorary Consulate in Verviers

09 March, Ambassador of Estonia to Belgium Mr Artur Kink opened a new Honorary Consulate of Estonia in Verviers. Mr Wilfried Niessen, Director General and Dean of the School of Management of the University of Liège, has been appointed as the Honorary Consul.

Opening ceremony was attended by Mr Tõnis Nirk, Director General of Business Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia and Mr Olivier Belle, Chef of Protocol of the FPS Foreign Affairs of Belgium and well as Mr Pieter Poppelsdorf from Enterprise Estonia. Among other high ranking representatives of the local authorities, the Governor of Liège Mr Hervé Jamar aslo attended the event.

In their speeches, those present, rejoiced over this historic event and emphasised the role of the Honorary Consul in further development of bilateral relations, notably economic as well as cultural ones. Mr Niessen, coming from the German-speaking community, will also contribute to stronger cooperation between Estonia and East Belgium.

During the visit, Ambassador and the Estonian delegation also met with the Head of Government of the German-speaking community Mr Oliver Paasch following a meeting with Walloon investment organisations and business representatives.

Evening reception was held for representatives of the Walloon and German-speaking regions, local consular corps and for representatives of the University of Liège.
